If you already have a wood stove in your home, you are well aware of all of the benefits it brings: heating your home comfortably without using electricity, burning wood cleanly and efficiently, adding aesthetic value to your home, and much more. Maintaining wood stoves isn’t difficult, but you may be unaware of the problems that arise when your wood stove is wearing down and needs to be replaced. Here are some common warning signs that could mean your home needs a new wood stove:

Your Wood Stove is Emitting Less Heat

If you have an aging wood stove that seems to be generating and emitting less heat than in previous years, it may be time to replace it. There could be varying causes of your wood stove not heating your home properly, but it is best to have your stove inspected by an expert in order to determine the cause and discuss options for repair or replacement.

Your Catalyst Has Been Used for 12,000+ Hours

If your home has a catalytic stove, the typical life of the catalyst is about 2-4 years, depending on how frequently you are utilizing the stove. Though catalytic stoves are initially more efficient, they typically require more part replacements and upkeep than non-catalytic stoves, which use baffles and air supply designs in order to burn waste gasses more efficiently. If you find you are having to replace your catalyst too often, it might be a good idea to consider a non-catalytic wood stove as a replacement.

Smoke From the Chimney is Black (Not White)

For a healthy wood stove, the smoke coming from the chimney will be white. If you are noticing darker colored smoke, this is cause for concern. Though dark or black smoke may be the result of burning the wrong type of wood, it can also be caused by a lack of “clean” smoke and the presence of soot. In any case, if your wood stove is producing smoke that is not white, it is important to contact a professional to determine the problem and fix it – especially if it means replacing the stove.
