So, you’re really pleased with the perfect look of your newly-installed outdoor paver patio. It’s a really nice feature for your yard and a great a reason to spend some more time outside enjoying the sunshine, fresh air, and singing birds.

As with any outdoor feature however, it will eventually get to a point where it is dirty and requires a good cleaning. How though, do you safely and carefully clean a paver patio without damaging any of the materials?

Here’s How to Clean a Paver Patio:

First clear away any lawn furniture, outdoor toys, and potted plants from the area. Brush off any debris like loose dirt, sticks, twigs, or leaves with a broom, sweeper, or leaf blower. Gently pull any weeds that have grown in between the pavers and scrub any moss that’s grown on them.

If the roots are grown in too deep to remove the weeds by hand without worrying that you might pull up a paver or two with them, use a non-selective plant killing spray and give it enough time to work before you clean your paver patio.

Then give the patio a good rinse with the spray from a garden house. It should have enough pressure to thoroughly rinse the patio paver, but not too much pressure.

This will remove any remaining dirt or debris and it will soak the pavers so they won’t absorb the paver cleaner or mild soap you’ll use to clean them next.

Whatever you do, never use a pressure washer to clean your paver patio. The pressure is too high, most people who don’t regularly use one don’t know how to use a pressure washer properly, and you will most likely damage the paver stone. Using a pressure washer, you can easily strip and “chew up” the top layer of the stone, leaving it looking dull and rough, opening it up to damage from the elements, and increasing the chances of it chipping or cracking.

If there are any stains, you can remove them by cleaning the paver stone with a specially made, gentle cleaning solution intended for use on patio pavers. Use that and a stiff brush to scrub the paver, remove any stubborn dirt or particles, and loosen stains.

Rinse your paver patio thoroughly with the garden hose and let it dry.
