5 Must-Haves for Summer Outdoor Living in Maryland

March 23, 2015

Spring has finally arrived in Maryland! The weather is warming up, and we can finally open up the windows and let the warm breeze in. But why stop there? If you don’t already have a thought-through outdoor living space, it’s time to turn your backyard into a summer getaway. Our outdoor living experts at Fireside Stone & Patio are here to give you a few ideas on how to create a truly relaxing and versatile outdoor space.

A Spacious Patio

A patio is a great way to turn a portion of your backyard into a level surface you can use as an extension of your indoor space. No more stepping out in the grass or trying to balance a chair on the bumpy lawn. With a patio, you won’t be tracking dirt back into your house, and there is less grass you have to cut.

But what if you already have a deck? A deck and a patio can complement each other. They do serve similar functions, but they also have their own exclusive features. For example, you can’t put a fire pit on a deck for safety reasons, but a patio is the perfect spot. As a Maryland patio contractor, we often install patios in homes that already have decks.

A Grill

No backyard oasis is complete without a grill. It doesn’t have to be a high-end grill, but it has to offer enough space for your cooking needs. If you have a large family or host cookouts all summer long, you need a grill that will allow you to cook multiple meals simultaneously. Otherwise, you’ll be constantly running back and forth between the grill and the kitchen instead of enjoying the food and the company.

A grill can be placed either on the deck or on the patio, depending on where your kitchen is located. Think the placement of the grill through, especially if you are installing a gas line. Once installed, the gas line will be difficult and costly to move if you decide you are not happy with the location of the grill.

An Outdoor Kitchen

Take summer grilling a step further and opt for an outdoor kitchen instead of a simple grill station. An outdoor kitchen has counter space, a mini-fridge, a sink, a dining area and everything you need to prepare food, serve it and eat it right there in your backyard. This is a great way to spend more time outdoors with your family. Outdoor kitchens in Maryland are extremely practical and can be enjoyed almost year round thanks to our relatively short and mild winters.

An Outdoor Fireplace

Who doesn’t love watching fire burn? And besides the stunning visual, in colder months you can also enjoy the radiating warmth. An outdoor fireplace or fire pit will quickly become the gathering spot during your summer pool parties, fall pumpkin carving parties, winter sledding parties and on many other occasions.

Shade and Privacy

You can have a large outdoor kitchen and a fantastic patio with a fireplace, but none of it will feel complete and comfortable without shade and privacy. Shade is necessary for enjoying outdoors on hot summer days, and privacy is often an issue if your home is close to your neighbors. Thankfully, there are many solutions that help create both shade and privacy in the desired areas:

  • Fencing: traditional or lattice
  • Vegetation: tall, manicured bushes or climbing plants
  • Gazebos and pergolas with curtains for privacy
  • Umbrellas and awnings
